Frequently Asked Questions
-
A risk assessment is a structured psychological evaluation used to assess an individual’s risk for future harmful or unlawful behaviour. The nature and scope of the assessment are guided by the referral question and may include the evaluation of sexual or general violent recidivism risk, as well as general risk of offending.
Risk assessments consider relevant historical, clinical, and situational factors and incorporate standardized risk-assessment measures. The findings can assist with legal decision-making, treatment planning, supervision, and the development of individualized risk-management strategies.
-
The assessment process is determined by the referral question and the circumstances of the matter. It may include one or more clinical interviews, review of available records, psychological or risk-related questionnaires, standardized assessment instruments, and preparation of the written report, and if requested, expert testimony.
-
Relevant records are requested when available and applicable. These may include:
Police reports, current, and if applicable, prior charges and convictions.
Official criminal record
Correctional or probation records
Previous psychological or psychiatric assessments
Employment information
-
A psychological assessment is used to answer specific questions about mental health diagnosis, daily functioning, risk, work-related competency, personality, or other areas relevant to the referral question.
The assessment may include standardized psychological tests, a clinical interview, and review of relevant information from other sources.
-
The length of an assessment varies depending on its type and purpose, the individual circumstances, and the amount and complexity of information requiring review.
-
Assessment results or reports will be generally provided within 3-4 weeks of completing the assessment, provided that all necessary information and records have been received.
